ECONOMYNEXT – US Singer Cher, who had has taken an interest in Sri Lanka elephants after helping a troubled animal that was gifted to Pakistan, slammed a state-run elephant orphanage in the island nation over a video of newborn twins going into the water.
“Does this look right, humane to anyone?,” Cher questioned, in a twitter.com post. “These babies look terrified, they want their mother. Why do PPL sell their souls for dollars.”

The reaction came after a video of the newborn elephant twin, the mother and another member of the herd entered the river for the first time, guided by herders to a running commentary.
“The zoo will make a fortune and then elephants momma, and nanny will be traumatized foreover,” Cher said in another message.
She also slammed the director of the zoo claiming she was only interested in making dollars.
The elephant orphanage is a top tourist hot-spot that charges.
The Pinnawela has a herd of elephants mostly made up of orphaned elephants found in villages bordering forests.
In Sri Lanka 300 to 400 elephants are found dead each year, some shot by farmers.
Cher had earlier also slammed the killings.

In November 2020, Kaavan, an elephant gifted by Sri Lanka to Pakistan was found to be in a zoo in Pakistan.
Animal welfare charities with the involvement of Cher had airlifted the elephant to an orphanage Cambodia.
She has her own charity Free the Wild.
