ECONOMYNEXT – The International Water Conference 2023 to be held next week will attract investments, Minister of Water supply and Estate Infrastructure Jeevan Thondaman said.
“The purpose of this conference is to showcase to the international community that Sri Lanka is open for attracting investments.
“We want to make sure a lot of knowledge is shared and a lot of networking takes place.”
“We are also coming up with a roadmap on how we can achieve Sustainable Development Goal 6, after the economic crisis set us back.”
The United Nations’ Goal 6 seeks to ensure access to water and sanitation for all, pointing out that access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene is the most basic human need for health and well-being.
“We have also invited the World Bank’s Global Director [Water Global Practice] Saroj Kumar Jha, to make some field visits to assess the World Bank’s contribution to Sri Lanka,” Thondaman said.
The minister said obstacles to meeting the goal included citizens’ mindset, inherited problems within the water board, and the economic crisis.
“Due to the economic crisis, we were at a standstill with most of our projects; however, January looks quite positive and my colleagues and myself are quite optimistic. We have set the water board on a path to restructuring.”
The minister confirmed that this failure to provide clean drinking water has led to malnutrition and stunted growth. (Colombo/Dec7/2023)
