ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka authorities have revised upwards tourist arrivals data for the latter days of April 2024, amid controversial high-priced visa scheme run by a private contractor which industry officials say has made application process more complex.
Data released up to April 28, initially showed lower tourism numbers.
The revised data also shows lower tourism numbers than first half of April 2024, but not as much as earlier.
‘Tourist arrival numbers has been updated as per the new visa categories introduced by the Department of Immigration and Emigration,” the tourist office said, without further elaborating.
Earlier reported data for example showed arrivals for April 27 at 3,995 and April 28 at 2,888.
The revised data shows April 27 arrivals at 5,757 and April 28 at 4,054.
According to the revised data, April arrivals were up 41 percent from a year ago to 148,867.
There has been warning that Sri Lanka will not be able to reach a targeted 2.3 million visitors in 2024 due to a high-priced visa system contracted out to a private operator which is one of the most expensive in Asia and also complex, compared to a globally acclaimed easy system run by the Department of Immigration until mid April.
April however is also the start of a lean season, and hoteliers say Indian elections may also be affecting arrivals.
Tourism Minister Harin Fernando said on Friday that price floors imposed by authorities to protect some city hotels, which the industry say has made Sri Lanka noncompetitive compared to East Asia will be removed from the end of the month.
In Sri Lanka ,hotel building costs are also expensive due to import duties imposed to protect some building material companies with political clout. (Colombo/May04/2024)
