ECONOMYNEXT – One Sri Lankan national has decided to stay in Gaza while 11 people have already crossed the Egypt border to return to the country, an official of the island nation’s Foreign Ministry said.
“Other six Sri Lankans want to cross the Rafah (Egypt) border and come to Cairo. But they have not come yet,” the official told EconomyNext.
Israeli forces on Thursday encircled Gaza City – the Gaza Strip’s main city – in their assault on Hamas, but the Palestinian militant group resisted their drive with hit-and-run attacks from underground tunnels, Reuters reported.
The city in the north of the Gaza Strip has become the focus of attack for Israel, which has vowed to annihilate the Islamist group’s command structure and has told civilians to flee to the south.
Sri Lanka government officials have said two Sri Lankans have already killed in the conflict started after the Hamas’ surprise offensive on October 7.
In a separate statement, the Foreign Ministry said the Sri Lankan Embassy Lanka in Cairo, in coordination with the Egyptian authorities, and the Sri Lankan Representative in Ramallah facilitated the entry in to Egypt of eleven (11) Sri Lankan nationals belonging to two (02) families who were stranded in the Gaza Strip, through the Rafah border crossing on Thursday.
“A team of officials from the Embassy received the eleven (11) Sri Lankans at the Egyptian side of the Rafah border and has made arrangements to provide transportation to Cairo for facilitation of their return to Sri Lanka.” (Colombo/Nov 3/2023)
