ECONOMYNEXT – A first batch of emergency dignity and maternal care kits by the United Nations Population and Fund (UNFPA) are to be distributed to 1,050 flood affected women and girls in the Malimbada, Akuressa and Kamburupitiya Divisions of Matara District.
“Tailored for the early stages of a crisis, kits help maintain proper hygiene, reduce health risks, and support the physical and emotional well-being of vulnerable populations during crises,” a statement by the UNFPA said.
The kits contain bed sheets, towels, underwear, maternity bed jackets, breastfeeding bras, chintz cloths, sanitary pads, toothpaste, toothbrushes, detergent, soap, and slippers.
Diapers, baby clothes, mackintosh, and essential hygiene products for newborns are also to be distributed.
An additional 1,000 dignity kits are provided to women and girls, containing soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, sanitary pads, and clothing.
The donation was made in collaboration with Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT).
The distribution is organized by the ministry of women, child affairs and social empowerment. (Colombo/October 31/2023)
