Nov 12, 2014 (economynext) – Sri Lanka’s Aitken Spence group said it had enhanced efficiency at the Fijian ports of Suva and Lautoka after acquiring control in July 2013, aiming to make the island the gateway to the Pacific.
Aitken Spence has increased ship crane productivity by 70% since taking over management control of Suva and Lautoka, a company statement said.
"Aitken Spence has also reduced berthing delays from between 12 to 18 hours to 0.50 hours on average while equipment downtime has been reduced by 60%."
These efficiency improvements were highlighted by Chairman/CEO of Aitken Spence Maritime, Logistics & Cargo Parakrama Dissanayake in his address at the 39th Pacific Maritime Transport Alliance Conference held in the island country of Niue in October.
“We will bring in global best practices in human resources and processes and also in having the right machinery to have the right level of productivity,” Dissanayake was quoted as saying.
Aitken Spence entered into a public-private partnership with Fiji Ports Corporation last year acquiring 51% of the shares in Ports Terminal Limited to oversee the repair and operation of the ports of Suva and Lautoka.
The diversified Aitken Spence group has interests in hotels, travel, maritime services, logistics and power generation with operations in South Asia, the Middle East, Africa and the South Pacific.
