ECONOMYNEXT- State Minister of Co-operative Services, Marketing Development and Consumer Protection Lasantha Alagiyawanna is saying that only a small percentage of imported items are checked for quality.
He told Parliament today that out of 7,600 types of goods normally imported to Sri Lanka only 1,100 are being imported after reviewing their quality.
In Sri Lanka, only items that have a required SLS standard have to be checked at the border.
The State Minister said that consumers today have faced huge issues because of the poor quality of the goods.
“So the challenge we have is that we should focus our immediate attention to checking the quality of about the 6,000 odd items before checking the quality of the locally produced goods,” he said.
The state minister said that President Gotabaya Rajapaksa established separate state ministries with relevant powers bestowed in them after identifying the current social needs.
“So based on that we have accepted the challenge of converting the cooperative services as one of the strongest services in the country,” he added.
Regarding consumer protection, he said the State Ministry is responsible for making sure consumers get good and services for a fair price at the right standard and quality.
Observers say that consumers should be the final arbiters of quality as if an item is of poor quality they would not buy it and that’s how market forces work. (Colombo/Sept10/2020)
