ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka has issued regulations controlling the imports of spices, vesak lanterns and joss-sticks from midnight last night, the Finance Ministry said.
The import of pepper, dry arecanut, tamarind, cinnamon, cardmom, ginger, cloves has been banned.
The regulations also bans the import of spices for re-export by entrepot trading centres, the statement said.
Vesak lanterns, kites and joss-stick imports will also be controlled.
Import or processing of waste will also be prohibited.
It will prevent domestic raw materials from being mixed with imports, the Finance Ministry said.
There had been a case earlier of illegal import of waste for recycling.
The finance minister had decided to control the imports to protect the brand names of Sri Lankan products. (Colombo/Dec06/2019)
