ECONOMYNEXT – More than a billion rupees worth of narcotics have been seized off the seas of Sri Lanka’s Southern city of Galle on Saturday the country’s Navy said.
The approximate weight of the haul was around 68 kilograms of Heroin and 50kg of Ice, reports said.
The Navy Spokesman Lt Commander Isuru Sooriyabandara told EconomyNext that the haul “is yet to be properly weighed and valued.”
He said that the Navy was on a joint operation with other law enforcement agencies including the Police Narcotics Bureau when a suspicious vessel was searched and the drugs allegedly found on board.
“There were a series of operations that we conducted in those waters,” he added.
Last year the Navy detected a multi-day trawler carrying 224kgs of heroin at sea in early November.
The biggest ever haul of cocaine in Asia was also detected off the seas of Sri Lanka two years ago. In that haul, over US dollars 140 million worth of the upmarket drug was found in shipments of sugar and timber coming from Brazil.
The biggest single haul was 928kg in the timber container which was headed for India.
International drug smugglers are turning to Sri Lanka as a transit hub, experts believe.
The quantity of the narcotics indicates that they are not intended for the Sri Lankan market as the population is too small to absorb such a high quantity of drugs. (Colombo, February 29, 2020)
