ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka President Ranil Wickremesinghe has made ports and airports essential services ahead of a planned strike against progressive taxes planned by a number of trade unions.
According to a gazette notice following services were made essential
1. Public transports services for passengers or goods.
2. 2. the discharge, carriage, landing, storage, delivery and removal of articles of food or drink, or of coal, oil or fuel from vessels within any port as defined for the purposes of the Customs Ordinance (Chapter 235)
3. 3. the provision and maintenance of facilities for transport services by road, rail or air, including roads, bridges, culverts, airports, ports and railway lines.
Sri Lanka’s banks and central bank are also due to join the strike on March 01.
Meanwhile one supporter of Sri Lanka’s JVP led National People’s Power died in hospital after being injured during a protest that was dispersed by police using tear gas and water cannon. (Colombo/Feb28/2023)
