The highest price was 77,300 rupees for 1,000 nuts down from 79,100 rupees a week ago, while the lowest 63,000 was down from 65,000 rupees.

A total of 555,561 coconuts were offered at the auction and 334,246 nuts were sold.

Wholesale prices were 95 to 100 rupees for large nuts and 80 to 85 rupees per small nut in the week to March 21, 2024.

Farmgate prices in Kurunegala stayed the same at 70,000 -75,000 per 1000 nuts.

Coconut oil was 570,000 – 630,000 rupees per metric ton from last week’s 590,000-600,000.

Coconut shells stayed the same at 28,000 to 30,000 rupees a metric ton.

The highest price was 67700 rupees for 1,000 nuts and the lowest was 60,000.

Sellers offered 448,746 nuts and all nuts were sold.

Farmgate coconut prices in Kurunegala were between 65,000 rupees to 72,000 rupees. Retail prices were 95 rupees to 105 rupees for a large nut and 80 to 92 rupees for a smaller one.

Wholesale coconut oil price was between 560,000 rupees to 600,000 rupees a tonne.

Turnover was at 802 million.

Sectors that saw higher investor interest were the insurance industry (307mn), followed by the diversified financials industry (108mn).

Capital Alliance Plc saw the most active trading volumes of the day and closed down at 49.50.

Top positive contributors to the ASPI included Asiri Hospital Holdings Plc (up at 25.90), Central Finance Company Plc (up at 98.50), and The Lanka Hospitals Corporation Plc (up at 122.75).

Investors continued to avoid banking sector shares and several top bank shares saw selling pressure: Heavy-weights Commercial Bank of Ceylon Plc (down at 90.00), Hatton National Bank Plc (down at 161.25), and Sampath Bank Plc (down at 68.00)

Dollar-earning bluechips Expolanka Holdings Plc (down at 137.75) and John Keells Holdings Plc (down at 185.00) also saw a lack of investor interest.

The All Share Price Index was down 0.61 percent, or 64.65 points, at 10,545.

The S&P SL20 index was down 0.79 percent, or 23.90 points, falling below the 3,000-mark to close at 2,999.

However, turnover was significantly higher than the preceding few days of trading at 1.5 billion.

Most of this came from a Ceylinco Insurance Plc transaction which contributed 767mn to the day’s turnover.

Other sectors that saw higher investor interest were the food, beverage and tobacco industry (297mn), followed by the capital goods industry (132mn).

The banking sector continued to attract less interest, same as last week.

Top positive contributors to the ASPI included Sri Lanka Telecom Plc (up at 92.40) after investors from China and India expressed interest in buying the company, market sources said.

Jio Platforms Ltd and a unit of Reliance industries of India and Gortune International Investment Holding Ltd have expressed interest in Sri Lanka Telecom, which the government has put up for sale.

Other positive contributors included the John Keells Holdings owned Asian Hotels and Properties Plc (up at 59.90), and Ceylon Cold Stores Plc (up at 42.90).

The parent company, John Keells Holdings Plc, closed up at 186.25.

Turnover was lower than the previous day at 567 million. Most of this came from trades in the capital goods industry (120mn), followed by the food, beverage and tobacco industry (111mn).

Market participants said there was some interest in blue-chip companies, such as CTC and Hayleys, possibly due to bargain-hunting in these counters.

Top positive contributors to the ASPI were Ceylon Tobacco Company Plc (up at 1.015.50), Hayleys Plc (up at 74.90), and Expolanka Holdings Plc (up at 142.25).

Teejay Lanka Plc was the most traded and closed up at 37.50. Dialog Axiata Plc also saw active volumes being traded, but closed flat at 8.80.

The banking sector as a whole suffered in the day’s trade, with market participants attributing it to a lack of news on the debt restructuring progress.

“The Board of Directors … resolved to increase the Company’s Stated Capital by the infusion of fresh capital in a sum of Rs 1,589.090,808 by way of a Rights Issue,” the company said in a stock exchange filing.

Citrus plans to sell 378,354,954 shares at 4.20 rupees each.

These will be issued in the proportion of 143 new ordinary shares for every 101 existing ordinary shares held by shareholders in the Register of Shareholders as at end of trading on the Date of Entitlement.

A Citrus share closed at 5.40 rupees on Wednesday, down from its previous day’s close of 6.30.

The current stated capital of the company is 3,256,172,662 rupees, the statement said.

The proceeds are to be utilized to settle outstanding related party loans borrowed from George Steuart and Company amounting to 1.2 billion rupees, and to facilitate the full subscription of the Company’s entitlement in the Rights Issue of Hikkaduwa Beach Resort PLC (CITH) amounting to 181mn rupees.

Citrus said it also wanted to retire non-related party loans of fully-owned subsidiary, Citrus Silver Ltd to the maximum extent possible; primarily identified for settlement are two bank loans amounting to 114mn rupees and 40mn rupees.

The Citrus Leisure hotel chain owns and operates Citrus Waskaduwa, Citrus Hikkaduwa and the Steuart by Citrus.

Both Hikkaduwa Beach Resort Plc and Waskaduwa Beach Resort Plc also announced rights issues.

The rights issues are subject to approval of the Colombo Stock Exchange and shareholders.

Last month, Citrus Leisure opened a revolving restaurant at the Lotus Tower in time for the season after signing a management agreement with the Colombo Lotus Tower Management Company (Private) Limited previously.

“The purpose of this rights issue is to enable the Company to settle/reduce the existing borrowings,” Chairman Ashok Pathirage said in a stock exchange filing.

Odels plans to sell 272,129,431 share at 12.15 rupees each.

These will be issued in the proportion of one (1) new ordinary share for every one (1) existing ordinary share held by shareholders in the Register of Shareholders as at end of trading on the Date of Entitlement.

An Odel share was trading at 14.00 rupees mid-day Monday, marginally down from its previous day’s close of 14.20.

The current stated capital of the company is 2,795.513,620 rupees, the statement said.

The rights issue is subject to approval of the Colombo Stock Exchange and shareholders.

In November 2023, Pathirage told shareholders Softlogic was looking to sell down assets and cut debt.

The group has decided to shed unproductive assets, review the internal operating processes and make some painful decisions to enhance liquidity and strengthen the financial standing of the group.

Bond yields were broadly stable.

A bond maturing on 01.06.2025 was quoted at 13.65/75 percent from 13.50/70 percent.

A bond maturing on 01.08.2026, was quoted at 13.75/80 percent.

A bond maturing on 15.09.2027 was quoted at 14.12/15 percent.

A bond maturing on 15.03.2028 was quoted at 14.15/18 percent from 14.15/25 percent.

The CSE was up in the first hour of trading; The All Share Price Index was up 0.13 percent at 10,754. The S&P SL20 was up 0.16 percent at 3,091. (Colombo/Jan5/2024)

The All Share Price Index was up 0.23 percent, or 25.11 points, at 10,740.

The more liquid S&P SL20 index was down 0.20 percent, or 6.32 points, at 3,086.

Softlogic Capital Plc (up at 8.00) saw the most active trade volumes.

Top positive contributors to the ASPI were Richard Pieris and Company Plc (up at 22.50), Ceylon Tobacco Company Plc (up at 1,012.50), and Melstacorp Plc (up at 92.20).

There was a net foreign outflow of 48 million.

The All Share Price Index was up 0.29 percent, or 30.64 points, at 10,714.

The S&P SL20 index was down 0.29 percent, or 8.87 points, at 3,093.

Sampath Bank Plc (up at 70.80) and Chevron Lubricants Lanka Plc (up at 93.80) saw active volumes being traded.

There was a net foreign outflow of 65 million.

Top positive contributors to the ASPI were Melstacorp Plc (up at 92.00), Richard Pieris and Company Plc (up at 21.50), and Hayleys Plc (up at 74.60).

Market participants pointed out that since treasury bond rates continued to be attractive (above 13.00 in most maturities), less interest in capital markets continued.
