ECONOMYNEXT- Sri Lanka has agreed to send a Navy ship to the Red Sea to counter the Houthi attacks, President Ranil Wickremesinghe said on Wednesday (3).
“A decision has been made to deploy a ship from the Sri Lanka Navy to the Red Sea, contributing to the security of the region against Houthi activities,” Wickremesinghe said at the Shilpa Abhimani awards held at Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH).
“Additionally, shipping has been disrupted due to Houthi attacks on ships in the Red Sea. To counter this, if ships reroute around South Africa instead of navigating the Red Sea, it will lead to increased cargo costs,” he said.
The Houthis, also known as Ansar Allah, are a Shi’ite political and military organization in Yemen.
Recent Houthi attacks on ships traversing the Red Sea to and from the Suez Canal and in the Indian Ocean have raised concerns about maritime security and have led to heightened tensions in the region.
Since November, the Houthi, who have declared support for Hamas, have attacked commercial ships claimed to be linked to Israel more than 20 times. (Colombo/Jan4/2024)
