ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka has inaugurated a train running from Mount Lavinia, a suburb of the capital Colombo to Kankasanthurai in the Jaffna peninsula using trains supplied by India.
The air conditioned diesel multiple units (AC DMUs) have been supplied to Sri Lanka railways under an Indian credit by RITES, an Indian state-run railway engineering firm.
“…These AC DMUs will help facilitate quicker travel between Western Province and Northern Province,” India’s embassy in Colombo said.
RITES had so far supplied 120 out of 160 coaches for the projet.
Another Indian firm IRCON is upgrading railway tracks between on the Maho-Anuradhapura-Omanthai track.
India had already upgraded the track from Omanthai to Jaffna which allows fast trains to operate. (Colombo/Dec09/2021)
