ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka has got a step closer to changing a labour law enacted in 1954 to allow female staff to work night shifts in information technology and business process outsourcing firms that provide services for foreign companies.
The island’s Attorney General has cleared a draft amendment to the Shop and Office Employees Act law that will remove restrictions on females working in night shifts, a government statement said.
The change will allow females to work night shifts in “offices where business activities are carried out based on information technology, knowledge outsourcing establishments, establishments obtaining the business process from outside, and the offices performing accounts, administration and technical activities for business establishments overseas.”
The cabinet of ministers had given approval to publish the amendment in the government gazette and present to parliament. (Colombo/Oct25/2023)
