ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s Water Supply and Drainage Board will be supported to transform its current paper document system into digital form to speed up its operations and make them greener, the Japan International Co-operation agency said.
The National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWSDB) is to digitalize its operations with the electronic document management system (EDMS) developed by Cyclomax, and with the support from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
“JICA is proud to be a part of this endeavor, delivering sustainable solutions and fostering a greener, more connected future,” the agency said in a statement.
The EDMS will digitize a substantial volume of documents processed manually by the NWSDB, ensuring administrative efficiency and productivity.
Digitalizing documents and approval procedures is expected to expedite project implementation, helping to expand piped water coverage nationwide.
A memorandum of understanding was signed by Nishantha Ranatunga, chairman of NWSDB; Tetsuya Yamada, chief representative of JICA; and K P N I Wickremasinghe, managing director of Cyclomax International (Pvt) Ltd on October 13.
Despite modern technologies and artificial intelligence (AI), most of Sri Lanka’s government services are still operated manually and payments are made in cash physically.
President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s government has acknowledged that the physical transactions are one of the main reasons for unending corruption in state institutions.
Sri Lanka has started a pilot project on digitizing government services to the public in nine state institutions as part of an International Monetary Fund condition in return to a $3 billion loan. (Colombo/Oct17/2023)
