ECONOMYNEXT – President Ranil Wickremesinghe has appointed the board of directors for the Sri Lanka Personal Data Protection Authority, under a law which was developed with stakeholder consultation, a President’s media office statement said.
“Sri Lanka’s Personal Data Protection Act No. 9 of 2022 (‘PDPA’) assumes paramount importance in light of the government and private sector’s digital strategies, along with global privacy law developments,” the statement read.
“It is expected to attract investment and promote the digital economy, aligning with the national digital strategy and the Sri Lanka unique digital identity (SL-UDI) project.”
The board will be led by senior charted accountant and former consulting leader of Ernst and Young in Sri Lanka and the Maldives, Arjuna Herath.
Other members include attorney-at-law Nisith Abeysooriya, president’s counsel Saumya Amarasekera, digital law expert Jayantha Fernando, Dr Sulakshana Jayawardana, technology management specialist Bimsara Seneviratne and electronics engineer Shehan Wijetilaka.
Currently, the board of directors is in the planning phase for the creation of the Data Protection Authority, an independent regulator to ensure governance of personal data.
“The Authority plans to formulate policy frameworks and regulations. It will hold public consultations and engage with advisory committees representing key sectors of the economy and other stakeholders to ensure comprehensive data protection measures.”
It will commence public consultations and awareness campaigns once it has the necessary capacity.
The government is intent on establishing a robust framework for personal data protection to promote trust in the digital ecosystem. (Colombo/Oct10/2023)
