ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka President Ranil Wickremesinghe and Microsoft founder Bill Gates who co-chairs the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) have discussed collaborative efforts to address global challenges and enhance Sri Lanka’s pivotal role in the world’s tropical belt.
According to the president’s office, the meeting took place at the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28) climate summit in Dubai, UAE on Sunday December 03.
A statement from the president’s media division (PMD) said Gates expressed the commitment of the BMGF to support Sri Lanka in building a robust and climate-resilient nation.
“The Foundation, which is already involved in initiatives in Sri Lanka, pledged to deepen its engagement with the country. Specific areas of focus include agriculture modernisation and the establishment of data systems for agriculture. The collaboration also aims to strengthen Digital Public Infrastructure and enhance Sri Lanka’s expertise in climate and adaptation.”
According to the statement, Wickremesinghe highlighted Sri Lanka’s green initiatives presented at COP28, seeking the support of the BMGF in advancing these sustainable projects. The President emphasised the need for collective action to address pressing environmental issues and underscored Sri Lanka’s willingness to play a constructive role in the global effort, the statement said.
Wickremesinghe told EconomyNext on the sidelines of the COP28 summit that Sri Lanka will push for investment into green initiatives globally after the Official Creditor Committee (OCC) finalising on the island nation’s debt restructuring.

President Wickremesinghe along with local and global advisors has inaugurated three ambitious projects to convert climate change-led disaster funding, which is mostly seen as donations, into viable commercial enterprises involving private sector investments.
The idea is to rally all the global nations in the Tropical Belt threatened by disasters related to climate change and bargain collectively with advanced economies which emit more greenhouse gases into the environment resulting in global warming for more green initiatives like renewable energy projects.
Wickremesinghe initiated a Climate Justice Forum (CJF), Tropical Belt Initiative (TBI), and called on the world to help establish the International Climate Change University in Sri Lanka. (Colombo/Dec04/2023)
