ECONOMYNEXT – Agriculture minister Mahinda Amaraweera has instructed the Kithul Development Board to introduce regulations to protect the quality of kithul treacle-related products, a statement by the government information department said.
The quality of kithul treacle and related products in the country are questionable due to the addition of sugar, and manufacturers are unable to sell their products because of a lack of certification.
“There is a high demand for kithul-related products in the international market, so the standard of kithul treacle must be certified,” Amaraweera was quoted as saying in the statement.
Amaraweera said he discussed the need for laws and regulations with officials of the Kitul Development Board and “advised the Board to take steps to introduce a series of new laws and regulations to protect the quality of kithul treacle-related products.”
It was also pointed out that the country has 3 million kithul trees but only 20 percent has been utilized.
“Kithul producers have sought permission to tap [harvest] the remaining 80 percent of tress that are mostly in protected forest reserves,” Amaraweera said. “We requested the wildlife and forest department heads to allow this.”
Accordingly, the Wildlife and Forestry Departments have given permission to harvest kithul trees in forest reserves. (Colombo/Nov23/2023)
