ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka has started the process of taking a census of the population, which is assisted by computers for the first time, the president’s media office said.
The last census was conducted in 2012.
The listing phase of the 15th Population and Housing Census commenced at the Presidential Secretariat this morning (1). It will be followed by the enumeration phase in 2024.
“The deployment of tablet computers, internet connectivity and geo-spatial technologies is a standout feature. This method, known as Computer Assisted Personal Interviewing (CAPI), is being employed for the first time,” a statement from the president’s media office said.
The Population and Housing Census entails a comprehensive tally of all individuals and existing residences within a country over a specific timeframe.
The process ensures that no person or dwelling is omitted or counted twice.
The census is the main source of official data for obtaining population and housing information, vital for shaping national policies, public administration and understanding demographics, ethnic distribution and other social characteristics.
It includes assigning a unique number to every building and obtaining GPS coordinates for each structure.
Additionally, it results in digitized maps at the village official division level.
For this year’s census, around 16,000 enumerators will be recruited, all of whom will be government sector employees. (Colombo/Nov 1/2023)
