Weekender Briefs: weekend fun for parents, education for all

Friday September 23

Movies in the Park – showing “Hocus Pocus:” The outdoor movie event will take place at 701 E. State St., featuring the Disney Halloween movie “Hocus Pocus.” The screening will last from 7:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. Free popcorn, drinks and popsicles will be provided, and there will be family activities before dark, indicating the start of the movie.

Participation: free

“Monty Python and the Holy Grail” Sing-Along: The Athena Cinema, 20 S. Court St., will host a screening of “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” for Ohio University Parents’ Weekend. The film starts at 7 p.m. and all attendees are encouraged to sing along.

Entry: $8

Stargazing weekend and campfire for parents: Outdoor Pursuits is hosting an evening of stargazing and campfires at The Ridges. Attendees will be able to roast marshmallows, spot constellations, and listen to tales and nighttime traditions. The event begins at 8 p.m. and is located at 100 Ridges Circle.

Saturday September 24

Girls in Aviation Day: The OU Women in Aviation Chapter is hosting a half-day workshop for girls in kindergarten through high school who are interested in aviation. The event will take place at 747 Columbia Road in Albany, and there will be snacks, crafts and more. The workshop is from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Entry: $5

Burl Oak GNCC: Dirt bike racing will continue through Round 11 of the 2022 GNCC Racing season. The races are located at 17270 South Wemer Road in Millfield, and participants are advised to follow the red directional arrows from the GNCC instead of their GPS. Gates open at 6:00 a.m. and racing begins at 8:00 a.m.

Participation: $35 for adults running on Thursdays, $25 for those running only on weekends, $10 for children, free for children five and under

Long Tall Deb and Colin John at Uncle Buck: Singers Long Tall Deb and Colin John will perform a blues-inspired set at Uncle Buck’s riding stable and dancing barn. The event takes place from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. and the venue is located at 73930 Buck Lane in New Marshfield.

Sunday September 25

Parent Weekend Hike: Outdoor Pursuits will also be hosting a day hike for students and their parents in Hocking Hills. The trip departs at 10 a.m. and returns at 3 p.m. The group will meet in Ping and return there once the hike is complete.

Entry: $20

Ohio Soccer vs. Buffalo: The Ohio women’s soccer team will face Buffalo at Chessa Field, located at 121 S. Shafer St. The team has partnered with Zero Waste for the game, which begins at 1 p.m.

Participation: free

Yellow Dirt Exhibition: The Kennedy Museum of Art will present the new paintings in John Feodorov’s Yellow Dirt exhibition. The exhibit is a response to ongoing health and environmental crises on or near the Navajo Reservation of more than 500 abandoned uranium mines. The event is from 1 p.m. at 5 p.m. and located at 100 Ridges Circle.
