Why Flight Simulator is downloading ‘Windows 11’ on Xbox • The Register

At first glance, Microsoft seems to have torn apart the infamous Windows 11 hardware compatibility list by inflicting the code on its latest gaming console.

While the original Xbox (now approaching its 20th anniversary) was little more than a supercharged PC in a big black box, sticking Vanilla Windows on the thing was probably a step too far for Redmond.

But one Register now reader updating the rather excellent (if a little greedy in hardware and sometimes buggy) Microsoft Flight Simulator on his Xbox Series X was greeted with the odd message: “Windows 11 has been downloaded successfully. “

Could it really be Windows 11 and all that shebang? We dare to say no.

Microsoft has stood out in the past for its unnecessary labeling. Regardless of this update, our reader certainly didn’t ask for it.

Unfortunately, we’re missing a similar console to try things out for ourselves, so we asked Microsoft for an explanation. Despite the usual perky promise that we were on our way, nothing was done.

Fortunately, a few other readers have pointed out that this download appears to be a promotion for Windows 11 that will appear in the game. What is it, a crossover episode?

The Flight Simulation Version Release Notes, dated October 19, read: “To celebrate the launch of Windows 11, Microsoft Flight Simulator is lighting up some of the world’s most famous landmarks in color. of Windows 11! also a free livery for the EXTRA 330LT. “
